No other venue captures the sonic and cultural diversity of Atlanta like SUGARHILL, an urban hang suite where underground legends, Blackberry professionals and occasional pop stars shake their groove thangs to 4 a.m. Sugarhill reminds us that soul has always been a Southern thing, as a new generation of crooners and sexy sirens gets funky and free during Tuesday night jam sessions hosted by soul mama Joi, featuring Little John and the Chronicle. An all-star lineup of DJs (Kemit, Salah Ananse, Jamad) offers a sweaty good time raising the roof with an alluring array of house, soul, dance and hip-hop. Beyond the music, the mixed-use venue also hosts poetry nights, comedy and fundraisers with a signature home-grown flair.

When APACHE CAFE rose from the ashes of the legendary Yin Yang Cafe years ago, denizens of Atlanta’s soul music scene predicted that the spot would also die. Almost one decade later, Apache is still alive and kicking. The secret of its success? Owners Asa and Karen Fain changed what didn’t work [(check out the refurbished patio in the back) and kept the great spoken word, hip-hop, jazz and soul music flowing.

Just behind the Varsity lies a place where soul, R&B and hip-hop got its beginnings in Atlanta. The APACHE CAFE has the cheap PBRs that you can find in East Atlanta, but it also features first-rate talent like power-piped Dionne Farris, indie rappers Sol Uprising, cocksure bassist Divinity and the rock-meets-funk-meets-soul stylings of Whild Peach. The cozy venue has also played host to underground sensation MF Doom, the multi-personality masked man whose flow has disarmed an entire nation of plugged-in audiophiles. This is the official launching pad for soon-to-be-known black music in Atlanta. It may not look like much, but neither does CBGB. “64 Third St. 404-876-5436. www.apachecafe.info”
