Veteran improvisers and big-name comedians alike perform at the five-year-old Relapse Theatre. But the 14th Street venue also serves as a proving ground for aspiring funny people. Richard Kickers applies the open-mic concept to improv comedy. Relapse also offers a wide variety of shows, from straightforward stand-up to “Whose Line is it Anyway?”-style games. A former church, Relapse baptizes would-be comics in the spirit of laughter. 380 14th St. 404-343-0347. relapsecomedy.com.

The novelty of improvisational comedy is that it’s always a surprise to performers and audiences alike. Also the Reader’s Choice for Best Improv Group, DAD’S GARAGE THEATRE (under new artistic director Kate Warner) takes the spirit of improv to heart by constantly dabbling with off-beat ways to keep its comedy fresh, from new formats like the wrestling-inspired comedy competition Brawl! to new settings for its improvised soap opera Scandal! The playhouse’s 10th birthday celebration in June found the entire troupe, from seasoned vets to young upstarts, in supremely silly form and ready to take on another 10 years.

Last spring, in conjunction with the centennial celebration of Piedmont Park, IMPROV IN THE PARK took teams from Atlanta’s three leading improv troupes - Dad’s Garage Theatre, Laughing Matters and Whole World Theatre - and gave them the unique chance to amuse audiences “al fresco”. The shows injected fresh levels of excitement by featuring three teams performing in a single night; drawing unusually large, lively audiences (up to 1,000 by the final performance); and providing an open-air format with off-beat opportunities for spontaneous humor, like the Dad’s Garage team bringing a spectator’s dog on stage to play “Lassie.” Let’s hope it becomes an annual event.
