After work and every weekend, THE PATH TRAIL connecting Freedom Parkway to downtown Decatur fills up. Joggers jog it. Pet owners empty their dogs along it. Parents push their high-performance strollers on it. Cyclists cruise it. The paved trail, maintained by the nonprofit PATH Foundation, goes from Freedom Park through Candler Park, Lake Claire, East Lake and into Decatur. The only section of trail where you’ll have to get on the street or the municipal sidewalk is in ped-friendly Candler Park. Readers with especially capacious lungs, take note: The trail continues past Decatur to Stone Mountain.

For years, cross-country teams have jogged on the rooted paths and trekked up the grueling hills of KENNESAW MOUNTAIN NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD PARK. The park offers about 17 miles of trails that wind through some of the Civil War battlefields, monuments and earthworks. And there’s a spectacular view of Atlanta from the top of the mountain. Though crowded at times, the diverse routes allow beginners and hardcore athletes alike to enjoy the expansive park. The park could get even better if officials decide to limit some of the teams (which can be as large as 100 members) to only certain running times to cut down on the wear and tear of the site. That’ll leave you alone with nature for a good sweat. less...

Emory University’s 185-acre LULLWATER PARK, nestled between Clifton Road and Emory’s Clairmont Campus, is home to a scenic lake, mature trees, and well-developed paths. Venture on the dirt trail that circles the lake, or take advantage of the paved path that meanders through the entire park. Lullwater, which is popular with students and non-students, joggers, fishermen, and those seeking a quiet place to read, is also home to Emory University President James Wagner’s sprawling English Tudor-style home.
Entrance on Clifton Road, across from the medical school. www.emory.edu.
