If you’re going to brave the streets on two wheels, it will probably prove important to know how to change a flat or lube your gears. It’s SOPO BICYCLE CO-OP’s goal to teach you those skills at little or no cost. Tucked away behind East Atlanta Village’s nightlife strip, the volunteer-run nonprofit believes that knowledge is the best charity. The DIY darlings at SoPo give you the 411 to get your road bike repaired and your fixie, well, fixed. 465-C Flat Shoals Ave. 404-425-9989. www.sopobikes.org. less...

Don’t know the difference between a derailleur and a crankset? That’s fine, because NO BRAKES will set you up with a bike that doesn’t have either. Now in its third year and freshly relocated to Grant Park, this stripped-down shop is ground zero for the current fixed-gear craze sweeping intown Atlanta. They’ll work on any kind of bike, but they specialize in lightweight track bikes with a single speed and, as the name suggests, no brakes. You can also have your ride built from the ground up by choosing from a selection of frames, handlebars, wheels and seats made of English leather and brass. Or you can buy a velodrome-ready racing bike. Or you can simply opt to get your old three-speed fixed up to run errands. No judgment here. 586 Woodward Ave. 404-589-9539. <a href=http”www.nobrakesatl.com”>www.nobrakesatl.com. less...

The problem with many of the indie bike shops is you get the “you ain’t hardcore” attitude unless you walk in covered in dried blood with a branch sticking out of your head. An exception to the rule is Atlanta Pro Bicycles on Highland Avenue, which has great customer service - but, alas, a price range and fleet of serious bikes daunting to beginners. GALYAN’S TRADING CO., however, has a bike for every level of rider. Those just starting out can ride home after dropping just $250, one of the best prices for a bike in the city. Likewise, hardcore bikers - whether long-distance street riders or shredding off-roaders - can spend serious dough on the ultimate two wheels. “691 Ernest Barrett Parkway, Kennesaw, 770-281-0200, and other locations. www.galyans.comless...
