A free neighborhood festival where you bump into the kind of cool neighbors you’d want to crush Pabst Blue Ribbon and get high with. Edgy and grunge creatives alike step out for this backyard-vibe of a good time in East Atlanta Village. This year’s music lineup included Material Girls, Flamingo Shadow, and Gold Yard. Not so thanks to ATLANTA STREETS ALIVE, a daylong celebration of human-powered movement and enjoying the city streets with friends and strangers. Since first being held on Edgewood Avenue in 2010, the blacktop party has touched Midtown, Downtown, Virginia-Highland, Inman Park, and, most recently, spread to West End in Southwest Atlanta. Cabbagetown’s CHOMP AND STOMP CHILI COOK-OFF AND FESTIVAL is one of the last remaining Atlanta events that hasn’t morphed into some out-of-control production plagued by supersized, craft-fair insanity. At the Chomp and Stomp, not only is there room to hang out and socialize, but it takes place in the fall, during a rare window of great weather. Because it’s smaller than some other festivals, the city allows you to bring your dog. Plus, you get to drink beer and eat chili that’s cooked by people who live within walking distance and are there for the bragging rights. And the activities go down in the neighborhood park - not lining the asphalt-covered streets. At Chomp and Stomp, you’ve got great local music, good beer, your hound dog and your lady by your side. Atlanta is a city of festivals. There’s the Dogwood Festival at Piedmont Park, Pride Week, the return of the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Downtown Festival and on and on. Our favorite is the NATIONAL BLACK ARTS FESTIVAL, which transforms the city for 10 days each July into a cultural haven, where dance troupes, musicians and artists pay homage to the African diaspora. This year’s highlights included performances by Grammy-nominated composer and trumpeter Hannibal Lokumbe and the Forces of Nature Dance Theater Company. In addition, there was the Pan-African Film Festival and an eclectic artists’ market.
