Tireless local arts advocate WonderRoot made an impact this past year with its Generally Local, Mostly Independent Filmmakers Night. The quarterly series, screened at the Plaza, offers a salon-like atmosphere of filmmakers at a wide range of stages in their careers. The success of its first year of programming was amplified when the High Museum signed on to curate and screen a selection of films from the series. Running everything from experimental shorts that could have been on MTV in the ’90s to locally produced sitcoms, this series has become the place to find the next generation of Atlanta’s filmmakers. 1049 Ponce de Leon Ave. 404-873-1939. plazaatlanta.com. wonderroot.org. less...

Splatter Cinema

More so than the average big Southern city, we’ve shown an increasing appreciation for the slasher movie, where buckets of blood bring bundles of entertainment. SPLATTER CINEMA recognizes the allure of gore, which makes the occasional film series so vital to the cultural scene. And these ain’t just any movies from back in the day: Splatter goes after original and spruced-up 35 mm prints of such classics as Demons, I Drink Your Blood, Suspiria and The Thing, educating younger audiences while offering a stiff dose of nostalgia for the old school. www.myspace.com/splattercinema.

1049 Ponce de Leon Ave. 404-873-1939 http://www.plazaatlanta.com With so much of Atlanta’s funky, retro edge being bulldozed or rent-hiked, those crazy kids over at the Plaza Theatre - led by the inspired husband-and-wife ownership of Gayle and Jonathan Rej - should be commended for their devotion to keeping the city real. The Rejs have really lit a fire under this Atlanta jewel and re-envisioned it for a new generation. The best testament to that vision is the SILVER SCREAM SPOOK SHOW. Outre film fan Shane Morton pays homage on the last weekend of every month to the old-school 1950s spook shows that combined scary movies with a cornball floor show. Morton’s shtick is as welcoming to the kids he wants to educate on the merits of vintage fright as it is to hipsters looking to rekindle a lost era. less...

Film Love

Andy Ditzler’s frightfully ambitious, dedicated series at Eyedrum, FILM LOVE, devoted to avant-garde and experimental film often unavailable to consumers by the likes of Stan Brakhage, Chantal Akerman and Joseph Cornell, is an Atlanta film culture treasure.

The screenings of the PEACHTREE FILM SOCIETY have given Atlantans their first look at such acclaimed cult flicks as “Donnie Darko” and controversial works like “The Believer”, which other theaters have shied away from. This year it gets special credit for its programs of Oscar-winning and nominated shorts, which provided two chances to see “The Accountant” after native son Ray McKinnon won the Best Short Film statuette for it.

Film festival competitions risk being clubby, self-congratulatory functions, but the IMAGE FILM & VIDEO CENTER cheerfully tramples on moviemakers’ feelings with its new Short Lived! A Shorts Slam. The screenings take inspiration from “The Gong Show” by featuring three judges - egged on by the audience - who either let the competing shorts run in their entirety or cut offending films off with a gong, and honor the entries with awards for both best and worst efforts.
