Atkins Park Restaurant & Bar - Virginia Highland

Atkins Park gets a bad rep for food because it’s mostly known as a bar. It’s honestly one of the best restaurants in Atlanta, way beyond bar food. “Bar” comes before “deli” in the name of this brave little establishment, and for good reason. A charming Italian restaurant in the respectable hours, a boisterous beatnik headquarters when the lights dim, NONI’S BAR & DELI has administered new life to a storied street. After two years, its hipster hangout status is no longer top secret. Without TVs or video games, it’s sleek and sophisticated, all while keeping a Sicilian grandmother’s touch. And the Saturday night dance parties have become the sweatiest and most talked about in the city. If only grandma’s cookbook called for all those PBRs and shots of Jameson. 357 Edgewood Ave. 404-343-1808 www.nonisdeli.com.

It’s not the overly familiar watering hole of TV’s “Cheers,” but the atmosphere at THE LOCAL makes it a comfortable destination. The place is usually peopled with a relaxed mix of Atlanta’s party people, busy local scenesters and a measure of the appropriately wacky Ponce characters. The huddled masses rub elbows here with a small-town ease and big-city bustle. It’s a hipster cocktail haven and functioning no-frills restaurant, depending on your needs. Reliable bar food and those oft-cited fries are the way to go, especially in the later hours of operation. Mixed drinks are available, but go for a beer from the well-stocked and pleasantly affordable bar.

Pubs in Atlanta have been increasingly devoted to providing decent food as well as booze. Now we have an out-and-out gastropub, TAP, another project of Bob Amick’s Concentrics Restaurants. Chef Todd Ginsburg offers a menu of small plates that includes buffalo-style fried calamari, pozole, and toast with chocolate and chorizo. If you want more than grazing fare, there are six entrees, such as roasted scallops with minestrone, and organic chicken and artichoke stew. The decor — yet another Johnson Studio project — highlights brewery hardware, and features a red deer that demonically overlooks the scene. Good beer selection, too.
