Just a heads up: SID MASHBURN isn’t the place you’re going to shop for an everyday suit. No, the Westside retailer is the place you go for the suit you’ll own for a lifetime — or the better part of it, since they start at $1,500. What’s more impressive than the quality and timelessness of the threads is the peak service customers can expect when they walk in. That even includes a liquor cabinet so shoppers can sip bourbon (or other spirit of their choice) while shopping. 1198 Howell Mill Road. 404-350-7135. www.sidmashburn.com.

You ever wonder where that well-dressed mixologist at the trendy bar - the guy with his sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms covered in tattoos, maybe a circa-1870 mustache perched upon his liquor-drenched lip - got his Southern-gentleman-with-an-edge outfit? You ever wonder where that well-dressed mixologist at the trendy bar - the guy with his sleeves rolled up to reveal forearms covered in tattoos, maybe a circa-1870 mustache perched upon his liquor-drenched lip - got his Southern-gentleman-with-an-edge outfit? No? Well, should it ever occur to you to wonder, and he happens to work at a bar where the tips are good, there’s a decent chance some of his look was picked up at Billy Reid’s new Westside store. Open as of May, Reid’s Atlanta store is a homey, masculine affair that a local fashion site described as a “retired Army colonel’s antique-outfitted study” (we were thinking 19th-century farmhouse with a pop of color for a modern twist). As for the clothes, Louisiana-born-and-bred Reid’s designs for men and women are tailored and refined, but in a distinctly Southern way - crisp and rugged. His sense of style has gone over well in the fashion world well beyond our muggy, swampy slice of the U.S.A. (Reid was named GQ’s Best New Designer in America and won the Vogue Fashion Fund Award.) Located a stone’s throw from fellow high-end and eponymously named men’s boutique Sid Mashburn, Billy Reid is helping Atlanta’s Southern gentleman (and hot bartenders) look their best.

We mean this literally, since SID MASHBURN and his trio of young haberdashers were featured among GQ’s “Best Dressed Men in America” earlier this year. And if you’ve got the coin, they’ll fix you up, too, with clothing and accessories carefully selected for their timeless, elegant, practical and classic qualities: Irish poplin ties in regimental stripes, chinos with watch pockets, A.P.C. five-pocket raw denim jeans, Mackintosh rainwear, Scottish cashmere sweaters and rugged Filson luggage. If you’re of more modest means, you’re welcome to drop by for a game of pingpong or to listen to the store’s eclectic stash of vintage vinyl as you swap fashion tips or discuss how the in-house tailors can bring your old suits up to date. 1198 Howell Mill Road. 404-350-7135. www.sidmashburn.com. less...

It’s unusual to stay relevant in fashion as long as BILL HALLMAN has, but somehow, this venerable store seems to have the freshest, cheekiest looks to help you stay ahead of the crowd. And now occupying an expansive 6,000-square-foot space, it has enough room to be twice as good. BH has always been about more than trendy denim and hipster T-shirts, but the addition of such men’s brands as Paul Smith and John Varvatos has upped the sophistication quotient. The women’s side, meanwhile, is off the hook, with more bags, accessories and even a carefully selected vintage selection.

Yes, they’ve got the usual Tommy, Ralph and Nautica out the wazoo, but what sets FILENE’S BASEMENT apart from the rest of the discount pack is the unpredictable but frequent infusion of hipper and more rare offerings: Diesel jeans, Missoni dress shirts, Valentino suits, French Connection T-shirts, Zegna ties, Ben Sherman slacks, even Prada shoes. And when it runs its New York Fashion Week promotion or gets the occasional delivery from a famed Manhattan style palace that begins with a “B,” the store has been known to be awash in Dolce & Gabbana, John Varvatos and Armani.
