Between DKA’s growing catalog, Dead Register’s forthcoming album, and newcomers Maudlin, it’s a good time in Atlanta to be a fan of darkside of rock ‘n’ roll. Maudlin’s Jessica Knight (vocals), Sara Slick (guitar), Tony Kozera (bass), and Ryan Fetter (drums) recreate the more abrasive side of goth and post-punk. You don’t have to dig deep into those sounds to hear something familiar, as Maudlin borrows a few cues from Christian Death and Rubella Ballet.

Above Repute: “Coffins” music video

Food fight! Scruffy street punks Above Repute’s “Coffin” video blends quite the juxtaposition of imagery. Raucous live footage is interspersed with scenes of punk kids in the streets — fighting with spaghetti and water balloons instead of clinched fists. Maybe they wanted to show the carefree nature behind each circle pit they start? That or their friends were Jonesing for Italian food.

Even Record Store Day is taking part in the well-earned media blitz surrounding the Coathangers’ latest album. The RSD website recently unveiled the title track’s music video, shot locally by Newmerica. It’s chock full of familiar faces, with Baltimore’s Alex Hagen (Ravagers, DINOS Boys) and Matt Gabs (Biters) adding some out of town flavor. Tune in, clap your hands, tap your feet, and beg Cousin Dan to recreate his slow-motion hair flop when you see him around town.

It’s easy to assume the younger folks moving here for college or just to escape the suburbs get a steady diet of the garage and psych rock. After all, they are Burger Records, Hardly Art, and the like’s target audience. The Jukes wrangle modern garage-punk influences for this two-minute assault of punchy riffs and distorted vocals. It’s not a far cry from what Onchi and Zoners have brought to Atlanta in recent years.

Piss Shy: The Best Of

The title of Piss Shy’s initial offering is obviously tongue-in-cheek. That said, it’s easy to believe this four-piece poured its best into these six cuts of erratic noise rock. Highlights suchas “Model Citizen” and “Dot Dot Dash” are ideal soundtracks for a manic spell — each ear-piercing scream and sudden tempo change builds a sense of unshakable tension. It’s quite the debut by the quartet of Cody Hamlet (guitar, vocals), Blake Gamel (drums), Luke Jones (guitar), and Ben Shockley (bass). Keep an eye out for a cassette version coming soon from Athens’ Star Rats Records.

Some Kind of Hate is a collection of punk, metal, garage, and hardcore cuts released by bands or labels practicing their craft in and around Atlanta. The previous installment can be read here. Submissions are accepted via e-mail.
