Like so many other industrial and EBM acts, Combichrist is essentially the aggro musical brainchild of one man. But even in its earliest incarnations Combichrist went beyond the typical guy-behind-a-laptop setup, allowing Andy LaPlegua to take on a post-apocalyptic frontman role while a cohort handled the technological aspects of the live performance. Eventually Combichrist expanded to include a full band that now includes a drummer, keyboard players, and other performers.

On Oct. 12, Combichrist returned to its hardwired roots with a rare Everybody Hates You-era set at the Shelter, reminiscent of the first few times I saw the band at the original Das Bunker Atlanta club night at The Loft (now known as Bunker.404 at the Shelter), and the band’s Dragon Con performance in 2005. Joined by current Combichrist keyboardist Z. Marr (also of Atlanta’s Pull Out Kings), LaPlegua stormed through a set of vintage Combichrist tracks including “Blut Royale” and “This Shit Will Fuck You Up.” If there’s anyone who knows how to work a crowd it’s LaPlegua. Even for this stripped-down performance, he still had eons more charisma than other acts of the genre. And even though I’ve become a bit spoiled by the higher production value of Combichrist’s full-band performances of the past few years, this throwback performance was still nostalgically fun and gave newer fans a peek into the passion of Combichrist’s origins.
