Hollow Stars' David Matysiak goes Boating
Hollow Stars and Coyote Bones member casts off with new project, unmoors material at the Earl.
Going strictly by the tags attributed to "Excerpt from Psychonautical v.2," you may assume the track is a freewheeling bit of beachy yacht rock with a touch of jam rock for good measure. "Seagulls," "booey," and "groovin" all point to a hotel room-grade painting of a serene waterside scene, but then you realize Boating is the new project helmed by David Matysiak, bassist of Hollow Stars and Coyote Bones, and see the descriptors fall in line with Matysiak's penchant for tongue-in-cheek psych rock. Along for the voyage are fellow Hollow Stars Dev Brown and Mason Brown and Council's Jordan Noel, rounding out the project with some familiar faces. The maritime modes and seafaring sounds are certainly here, but in a much more darkly exotic, or uncivilized sense. The wordless three minutes bring a vibe of ritualistic tribalism backlit by neon fluorescence. It's a godless groove wrought with rickety percussion, primal urgency, and brutish musicality.
