On the eve of what would have been Jerry Garcia's 69th birthday, Furthur, led by original Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, visited Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Alpharetta for the final show of its 2011 Summer Tour. Opening and closing the show with the Buddy Holly classic "Not Fade Away," — and the refrain "you know our love will not fade away" — made it hard not to think of the show as a tribute to Garcia, the spiritual leader of the band and the Deadheads, who died in 1995. Furthur also performed two songs ("Mission in the Rain" and "Rubin and Cherise") from the Garcia side project, the Jerry Garcia Band, that were rarely performed by the Dead back in the day. The jubilant crowd was also treated to Dead classics "New Speedway Boogie," "Unbroken Chain," "China Cat Sunflower," "I Know You Rider" and "Terrapin Station." They ended the almost four-hour show with encore performances of "US Blues" and the Beatles' "The End."
