Female MCs star in new doc, Princess hosts screening at Tongue & Groove

My Mic Sounds Nice: A Truth About Women in Hip-Hop premiers tonight at 10 on BET. Locally, former Crime Mob member Princess is hosting a screening for the documentary, which features hip-hop pioneers such as Roxanne Shante, Queen Latifah, and Jenny-come-latelys such as Nicki Minaj (Kanye West recently hailed the uniquely voiced rapper as one most likely to last and have an impact on future hip-hop).

Judging from the trailer (below the jump), which has everyone from Eve to Missy Elliott recounting when they wrote their first rhyme, the documentary will provide a nice insight into the love these MCs hold for hip-hop, all while holding the attention of its viewers. In addition, “The film examines gender-specific differences in artistry, marketing, promotion and economics, explores why there are far fewer female than male MCs, and discusses whether there’s still a place for women in hip-hop,” according to a press release.

The documentary is directed and executive produced by Ava DuVernay, who created the award-winning 2008 hip-hop documentary This Is the Life.
