NOTED ACTS?
?BLUE JAYS, INTERGALACTIC COWBOY — Formerly two-thirds of the splendid Gene Vincent-style rockabilly band Poor Little Fools, bassist Jay Murphree and drummer Kat Cunningham have put together a smooth new '50s-style act — the Blue Jays — with more of a Sun Records sound this time around. Opening act the Intergalactic Cowboy is a spaced lone ranger who rides herd on a mind-expanding assortment of tape loops, whipped up by his acoustic guitar. Dottie's (Nicoll)
GLEN CAMPBELL — I heard four different versions of "Wichita Lineman" last month — two cheesy local bands doing the "hip to be square" thing, Shelby Lynne rocking it out and a stunning non-ironic note-for-note rendition by Dirtball. The verdict is in, and like so many of Campbell's other hits, it's a damn great song. Yeah, he has seen his better years and done the VH-1 "Behind the Music" drugs and booze testimonial. In his prime, Campbell was an innovator in country music, one of the first artists to bring it to mainstream America with his successful early '70s TV show. Chastain Park Amphitheater (Kelly)
THE CHRONICLE, JJASON BLACKWELL, CARL HANCOCK RUX — The final night of the National Black Arts Festival's "Midnight Jams" series at the Renaissance Hotel features spoken word star Carl Hancock Rux sharing a bill with two local R&B/soul bands. Doors open at 10 p.m. Renaissance Hotel West Ballroom/590 W. Peachtree (Sarig)
DR. DAN — See Earshot. Brandyhouse (Layden)
ENON — See review. Echo Lounge (Ware)
HIP-HOP WORLD PARTY — To celebrate the launch of a locally-based hip-hop website with an internationalist vision, Hiphopworldparty.com is throwing a series of events around town this weekend. The highlight is tonight's concert, featuring performances by 69 Boyz, Pastor Troy, Section 8 Mob, Lil' Jon & the Eastside Boys and others. A portion of the proceeds from the show goes to the Urban Youth Development Center. Tabernacle (Sarig)
TONY ORLANDO — See August 4. Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater (Sarig)
GLENN PHILLIPS — Arguably Atlanta's most inventive and least compromising guitarist, Phillips' instrumental dexterity never overwhelms the songs, something rarely said of most six-string shredders. Never pandering to flash for flash sake, Phillips nonetheless will startle you with his agility when he opens up and lets go. He's still pals with some members of his old Hampton Grease Band, one of whom, bassist Mike Holbrook, joins him tonight. Swimming Pool Q's guitarist Bob Elsey will also sit in, making this a cozy old-timers get-together. Adding to the family values atmosphere, the earlier of the two sets is an all ages, no-smoking show starting at 8:30 p.m., so the youngsters who are seldom admitted to club shows can get to bed at a reasonable hour. Red Light Café (Horowitz)
SOUP — Local quintet Soup promise new material at tonight's show, including "a few new three-and-a-half minute ditties." They're out to force the question: "Are they a pop band that jams or a jam band that pops?" The curious can decide tonight. Smith's Olde Bar (Sarig)
SWINGIN' NECKBREAKERS, CATFIGHT! — Labelmates of the Woggles, the Swingin' Neckbreakers are a Jersey trio who rock with almost unbelievable levels of energy and propulsive force. The secret may be in part the huge Les Paul bass, which their frontman plays, although his massively deep pipes and his devil-may-care attitude put plenty of additional kick into their stage presence. Local punk/pop gals Catfight! have the opening-act honors tonight. Star Bar (Nicoll)
TEAM CLERMONT'S BIG WEEKEND — Day two of Team Clermont's third anniversary celebration erupts with the instrumental visions of D.C.'s Trans Am, always a respected underground experience. They may be traveling a different highway than Don Caballero and Rodan, but they're definitely heading toward the same destination. Playing in support of their forthcoming CD, The Red Line, Trans Am will be selling the album tonight, six weeks before it hits the stores. 40 Watt Club/Athens (Hatcher)
ALI FARKA TOURE — See article. Variety Playhouse (Dominey)
TRINKET — See Earshot. Cotton Club (Smith)
