DEKE DEAN'S ROCKABILLY OPEN MIC NIGHT — Vocalist/guitarist extraordinaire Deke Dean hosts the Northside Tavern's latest variation on their Tuesday night Open Mic event. Dean fires up each show by playing a short set with his own band, after which he invites any guest rockabillies in the house to join in. Northside Tavern (Nicoll)
HANSON — See article. Tabernacle (York)
CHARLIE HUNTER, SQUAT — Even if he didn't play bass and lead simultaneously on his custom made 8-string contraption, Charlie Hunter's innovative and sophisticated instrumental approach to the funk, jazz, soul, Latin and even reggae strains in his music would be reason enough to dig his scene. But watching the seated, unassuming Hunter live, you're struck by just how easy he makes it look when he delivers skittering, low-key, jazz guitar leads as his bass lines insistently bop away. He's touring without the horns that spice up his new album, but accompanied only by bubbling percussion and drums, Hunter has plenty of room to strut his stuff. You wish he would just stand up and burn, at least occasionally, but there are enough hot licks to keep the fret-shredders at bay. Popular Athens jazz-fusioners Squat open. Georgia Theater/Athens (Horowitz)
THE JIBE — This New York City rock band sounds a bit like the Spin Doctors (remember them?) on rock steroids. Though the lead singer emotes in a typically post-Pearl Jam fashion, the Jibe's obvious affection for white guy funk and syncopated rhythms make 'em an ideal candidate for a H.O.R.D.E. tour. Brandy House (Robertson)
NEVE — Wow, talk about diversity. On their current tour, these Floridian, white bread rockers are warming up for both Kiss and Hanson. Unfortunately, they lack the imagination of either, and their warmed-over, alterna-pop almost makes Matchbox 20 sound revolutionary. Tabernacle (Robertson)
MICK TAYLOR — The man who replaced Brian Jones in the Rolling Stones — and performed with them at Altamont — hits town tonight. Anyone who's ever marveled at the delicate guitar figures in Stones tunes such as "Time Waits For No One" and other classics from their early-'70s phase should come pay homage at the feet of the man who actually played 'em. Cotton Club (Nicoll)
NEIL YOUNG, THE PRETENDERS, TEGAN & SARA — In 1993 when Neil played Lakewood with drummer Jim Keltner and bassist Duck Dunn, the energy level was low and the song selection was pedestrian. Hopefully this time around pianist Spooner Oldham will infuse some Muscle Shoals boogie into what very well should be one of the better shows of the year. Only Neil has the power to play obscure titles for the lifelong fan and only Keltner has the power to vary his speed. The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde's has always had an affinity for Neil — she was at Kent State when the National Guard opened fire and forced Young to pen "Ohio." If the two play together on stage, it will be a special moment indeed. Chastain Amphitheater (Prusin)
