?Noted Acts
-?ANDREW BIRD’S BOWL OF FIRE, HOT CLUB OF ATLANTA A grand (and nearly forgotten) tradition of early 20th Century “club jazz” comes alive tonight via these two fine ensembles. Violinist Bird is an expert touring practitioner of the form, while the Hot Club were once revered Tuesday night regulars at the late, lamented Freight Room in Decatur. Celebrate that olde time spirit! Star Bar (Nicoll)

BURNING SPEAR — Through 30 years and almost as many albums, Winston Rodney’s spooky, often trancelike roots reggae has been a steady presence on the Rasta scene. While his peers often resorted to dancehall, slick pop, funk and even disco to attain widespread success, Rodney and his delicious, delirious horns have kept the faith. Rightly accused of repetition for repetition’s sake, the mighty Spear’s potent, unrelenting live shows still achieve an intense, almost hypnotic spirituality matched only by deceased legends Tosh and Marley. With last year’s Grammy win under his flowing dreads, Rodney is clearly not resting on any laurels. Tabernacle (Horowitz)

CIGAR STORE INDIANS — A rugged, long-haul truckers’ version of a rockabilly band, the Indians have an earthy, danceable, less frantic sound that offers much more appeal to the average modern listener than to the hardcore ’50s traditionalist. This show is a benefit for the South Atlanta Neighborhood Development (S.A.N.D.) organization. Echo Lounge (Nicoll)

DAIKAIJU — Taking their name from the Japanese word meaning “giant monster,” this powerhouse instrumental surf-rock quartet hails from Huntsville, Ala., where they musta been sniffing fumes from the local Space & Rocket Center when they recorded their amp-blastin’ demo disc. Will they explode on the scene as a new Man or Astro-Man? The answer is buried in their Godzilla-sized waves of reverb! Club 513 (Nicoll)

DION — See listing for August 25. Fred Brown Amphitheater (Nicoll)

DR. JOHN — Always a crowd-pleaser, this New Orleans keyboard wizard combines an easygoing stage persona and a soft, compelling growl of a voice. Steeped in equal parts colorful Creole imagery, dark voodoo mystery and rich Crescent City tradition, his original work has endured — with good reason — for more than 30 years. Lakewood Fairgrounds (Nicoll)

KRISTEN HALL — Local favorite Hall warms the heart and soul with her comforting ballads. Always a treat, and worth keeping quiet for, the wonderful singer/songwriter/guitarist is a true pioneer in the Atlanta folk scene. Eddie’s Attic (Smith)

ANGELA MOTTER, EARTHSHAKING SAMBA — Atlanta based singer-songwriter plays her self-described “folkaltneragroove” music at this benefit for Candler Park performance space, First Existentialist Congregation. Also appearing is Earthshaking Samba, a large-scale, open-admission percussion ensemble specializing in Brazilian rhythms. First Existentialist Congregation (Robertson)

MOYE — Earnest-young-man, alterna-pop is generally a turn off, but there’s something oddly compelling about this New York trio. Perhaps it’s John Moye’s worn-beyond-his-years soulful vocals, or maybe it’s the stately piano-based melodies and his world-weary (though never whiny) musings. Heck, maybe it’s just my weakness for anything vaguely reminiscent of Cat Stevens. Whatever, Moye’s quietly timeless, melancholic songs are petite, gem-like wonders that definitely rank a cut above. Smith’s Olde Bar (Robertson)

NO H.A.R.M. DONE BENEFIT --- See Earshot. The Earl (Smith)

PURPLE HAZE — Liquid Groove presents two rooms of DJs, including national names DJ Icey from Orlando, Moonshine’s Dieselboy and Quiver from NYC’s club Twilo. Also spinning: Tooke, Confucius, Kazell and locals Jeff Joseph and Kolia. Masquerade (Sarig)

REHAB — Mixing bits of Goodie Mob’s Southern singsong style and Kid Rock’s cracker rock-rap sensibility comes the duo Rehab, Atlanta’s latest hip-hop export. As they gear up for the major label debut, out in October, Rehab hits local stages, where they often rhyme over the masterful spinning of local turntablists Faust and Shortee. Cotton Club (Sarig)

SING SING PRISON — Alt-rock on the heavy side, Sing Sing Prison seem to draw inspiration from Seattle’s flannel heyday (Soundgarden and early Pearl Jam). But to their credit, they sure know a good metallic hook when they happen across one. Not incredibly daring, but effectively brooding hard rock for disaffected youth (of all ages). Dark Horse Tavern (Robertson)

SEEN + HEARD SNEAK PREVIEW — A one-night sampler of what to expect from Seen + Heard, the Atlanta Women’s Arts Festival, coming in February. The all-female bill features music by pop singer Sonya Vetra, as well as theater and performance art. Admission is free, but reservations are recommended (404-797-0489). PushPush Theater/1123 Zonolite Road (Sarig)

WAR, AVERAGE WHITE BAND — Funk, R&B and a ’70s political sensibility merged in War, which scored a string of influential, horn-driven hits starting while fronted by Eric Burdon. Lots of personnel changes ensued over the years, and though they never really went away, a ‘94 reissue of all their albums helped bring War back into the public consciousness. This time out, funk pioneers War follow fellow funk/soul brothers Average White Band. Hitting at about the same time, AWB’s tight arrangements gave their sound a hot R&B flavor, and their timelessly cool instrumental “Pick Up the Pieces” still turns up here and there. Chastain Park Amphitheater (Regan Kelly)

RANDY WEEKS — A former member of the great California country band the Lonesome Strangers, Weeks recently released a solo CD on Hightone Records. While not as twangy as his past work, and the great harmonies he shared with Jeff Rymes are sorely missed, Weeks can still construct a catchy melody. Rymes currently lives in Athens, so maybe he’ll show up and surprise us. Either way, it’s worth checking out. Star Bar (James Kelly)
