NOTED ACTS
DEKE DEAN'S ROCKABILLY OPEN MIC — Suave crooner Dean and his Blue Avenue boys play host to an assortment of guest performers here every Tuesday. Not only are any strays cats encouraged to come in solo, but Dean's now requesting that whole bands drop by for impromptu sets as well. Northside Tavern (Nicoll)
STING — Sexier than Phil Collins and certainly more gifted, Sting continues to churn out well-produced pop CDs. Still, as if distrustful of his own inherent talent, he has veered away from environmental philanthropy and begun to rely more heavily upon commercialism, as a kind of endorsement for the latest model of Jaguars which bear little resemblance to the subtle sleekness of their former panther-like incarnations. Similarly, Sting's latest album is a commercial venture which bears a distant resemblance to the King of Pain's soulful, splintered vocals and the brilliantly stratified percussive layers that once characterized the Police. Lakewood Amphitheatre (Lueker)
