EDDIE ELLIOTT BAND — Los Angeles based singer/songwriter Elliott has been compared to Dave Matthews, but with more acoustic elements and less weird vocal acrobatics. Eddie’s Attic (Smith)
J. MASCIS AND THE FOG, RED LEVEL ELEVEN — Dinosaur Jr. frontman Mascis will be joined by bass growler and living legend Mike Watt on bass tonight. Expect more than a few foggy notions from this ungodly union. The show comes one day after More Light, Mascis “comeback” record, is released on Ultimatum Records. Opening act Red Level Eleven is a local band on the rise, with a new CD on the way full of cool Pixies/Sonic Youth-type songs that grind, sway and jag while generating false memories in listeners of what it must’ve been like to have been cool in 1988. MOTO-LITAS, TELEPATHICS, SOUND DEVICE — One of the very few Atlanta bands who may be more smile-inducing than the Motos themselves are the Telepathics, a hilarious garage-rawk trio featuring members of Ultrababyfat and the Titanics. The only sound device you’ll need to experience the opening act Sound Device is some good hearing protection. They rrrock. Star Bar (Nicoll)
STEW — Touring with his bandmated in the Negro Problem — multi-instrumentalist Heidi Rodewald (who also produced Stew’s solo album) — this promises to be a striking night of unusual art-pop-folk. Stew’s songs are like Burt Bacharach playing cards with Randy Newman and Tom Waits in Rufus Wainwright’s bedroom. Stew’s multi-dimensional voice, transforming from a flying falsetto to a low-down soulful croon, drives offbeat lyrics, minor-key melodies and cleanly-layered production. Far less aggressive than his work in TNP, partially due to the lack of percussion, Stew’s eclectic (some may say weird) debut disc — an artsy song cycle of sorts — is one of those rare albums filled with beautiful yet uneasy tunes that crawl under your skin and stay there.
