FRI/JANUARY 5
THE BOGUES, ALLISON JARRELL — The Bogues are Atlanta’s best-kept pub rock secret, playing the city’s coolest new musician’s hangout. Tonight, in addition to playing all their rollicking gems, they’ll present a special intimate set by the spellbinding Allison Jarrell. Blue Lagoon Lounge (Smith)
CANDELA, NUTE — Candela are a ball of aggression masquerading as an all-female hard rock band. Dual guitarists Gia Garrison (a Les Paul slingin’ blonde goddess, infamous from stints in Atlanta grrrl bands Hummer and Boobytrap) and Ramona Darniene (the ax-shredder formerly with underground rumblers Mobius Strip) anchor this magma-tempered quartet. Opening band Nute from Charlotte, N.C., play rock of the shiny vinyl/faux-snakeskin pants variety, what passes for ’70s glitter/glam-rock revivalism with a dash of Black Sabbath bottom end, and have played with appropriately similarly influenced bands such as Nashville Pussy and Buckcherry. Masquerade (Smith/Ware)
DRUM DIALOGUE 5 — The latest in Euphonic Productions’ percussion powwows features local jazz drummers Bryan Fielden and Jamie Shephard. Fielden, best known for his work in San Augustin, makes his final performance as an Atlantan. Following a path taken by so many of the city’s cutting-edge jazzers, Fielden’s packing up and moving to New York the next day. Earthshaking Music (Sarig)
ELECTRIC EELS — These Eels are gonna go serpentine on your ass tonight at the former gas station/blues emporium in the middle of nowhere. Blending rock, rhythm and booze, these cats are sure to light a fire under the beckoning Citgo sign in the Winder sky. Chip’s/Winder (Smith)
GRETA LEE BAND — Country songbird Greta Lee kicks up some dust and wood shavings at Eddie’s tonight. The feisty Lee shows the Decatur crowd how the bubba side lives. Eddie’s Attic (Smith)
DANIELLE HOWLE, JODIE MANROSS — Howle lets it all hang out as a part Janis Joplin, part Bessie Smith, part folkin’ lunatic who sings, laughs and talks through each show as if you’ve stumbled into her communal den. Tall tales and intimate odes are the fare with this South Carolinian, tirelessly touring and giving her all, whether she plays to 10 or 10,000. She’s bringing singer/songwriter Jodie Manross along for the ride, so tonight should bring some old friends and funny stories out of the Attic woodwork. Eddie’s Attic (Smith)
STAR ROOM BOYS, TWO DOLLAR PISTOLS — A double-barrel blast of high-caliber roots country, the way it oughta be. The Star Boys come from Athens with a sound more characteristic of Bakersfield, just burstin’ with Buck Owens twang. The Pistols, who hail from North Carolina, pack a boot-kickin’ beat that recalls the livelier incarnations of George Jones and Merle Haggard. Star Bar (Nicoll)
THE SOUND DEVICE, OCELOT, WISLOV — The perfect venue for this nerve-numbing show. The Sound Device are poised for greatness with their fIREHOSE meets Husker Du smack attack. Literally, a battering experience. Tonight should be an ear-ringing, soul-purging bill with a sighting of the turgid emotional math rock quartet Ocelot, shredding angular riffs live in its natural habitat. Opening act Wislov, borrowing pages from the Medeski Martin & Wood book of frenetic beat syncopation meets perpetual bass-groove-mantra and the Miles Davis In a Silent Way book of haunting lead solo exploration, weave a thick, textured jazz thatch. Recommended for the adventurous jazz ear. The Earl (Smith/Hutchinson)
STEEP — Steep is a melodic pop/rock band in the mold of Collective Soul. In fact, their demo sounds like some Collective Soul outtakes. Soul-man Ed Roland helped produce these guys, but do we really need a stale Collective Soul sound-alike? Collective hair and cool shirts on stage, under all the pretty lights. Ah, who needs Soul, when you have a growing following? Persona and Morning Glory are also aboard this wayward vessel. Echo Lounge (Smith)
