FIGHTING GRAVITY, THE CLARKS — Richmond, Va.’s Fighting Gravity has been touring and recording for over 12 years. The long-standing band offers a spin-dizzy mix of reggae, ska, rock and funk. Imagine the English Beat and Dave Matthews lost in the throes of a tepid grudge-fuck. This year’s live double CD, Hello Cleveland, produced by local studio guru and Cracker hand David Lowery, offers a thorough look at Fighting Gravity’s upbeat and energized global take on rock. Another long-running independent, opening act the Clarks create rock solid melodic pop tunes with an often rough edge. Their latest release, Let It Go, contrasts a kind of thematic lyrical simplicity with a more developed sense of vocal harmony and sly hook savvy. Smith’s Olde Bar (Smith/Hutchinson)
MOONSHINE KILLERS, HELGAS, BORN TO PLEASE — The Star Bar will probably sell as many earplugs as longneck Buds tonight. The Killers are as raw and wild as rock groups come, snarling with overdriven guitar fury and booze-fueled backwoods rage. The Helgas hit hard with an early ’80s Brit-punk bop, after Born to Please starts the show with some energetic pop/rock. Star Bar (Nicoll)
