FRI/jANUARY 12
A KING CELEBRATION 2001 — In addition to the second night of the main “King Celebration” concert at 8 p.m. (see listing for Jan. 11), at 1 p.m. Don Byron and members of the ASO present a chamber music concert featuring the works of Coleridge-Taylor and Aaron Copland. Park Street Church/Clark Atlanta University (Sarig)
BRAVEHEART — Bitch presents kilts, killing (time, musically speaking) and camaraderie as glam punks Lust (as well as Orchrist and I.P.S.) perform in costume as Viking invaders. Come dressed up to get in free for a dressed up turkey leg feast. 9 Lives Saloon (Ware)
DAPPLED GRAYS — Bluegrass band the Dappled Grays celebrate the release of their CD, In the Gait, featuring 11 carefully plucked songs mixing traditional and original elements. Red Light Café (Ware)
ELECTROMATICS — Harpman Jon Liebman fronts the Electromatics, formed by the remaining members of Ju Ju Root after bandleader Stoney Brooks’ departure. The band focuses on ’40s-’60s jump blues, Chicago blues and R&B. Liebman has roots in the Washington, D.C./Northern Virginia area, and tonight’s gig features guest guitarist Pete Kanaras of the Nighthawks, a band based in Northern Virginia. Northside Tavern (Powell)
TINSLEY ELLIS — Although he must be disappointed that his most recent, and arguably best, album, Kingpin, got lost amid Capricorn’s sudden slide into Palookaville this year, Ellis is too seasoned a road warrior to let that minor setback get the best of him. He just plows along, slinging out his rugged blues/rock with energy, enthusiasm and a natural flair for performing. One of the best, and least pretentious, lead guitarists you’ll see, Ellis remains a class act intent on tearing up clubs and leaving new fans in his wake. Smith’s Olde Bar (Horowitz)
DODD FERRELLE — Ferrelle and the Tin Foil Stars celebrate the release of his first solo album, A Carriage on the Hill — a mix of poppy Americana recorded by former Sugar member David Barbe. Barry Sell, Jackpot City and the Fountains also perform. Athens Music Factory/Athens (Ware)
L.O.A. — See article. PlanetJam Cotton Club (Hutchinson)
REDNECK GREECE, SOUTHERN BITCH — Part Roy Orbison and part Ray Stevens, the Athens-based country rocker Greg Reece mixes memorable melodies with hearty laughs. He’s joined tonight by Alice Berry (aka Formica Dinette) on vocals, embracing her inner redneck. Opening act Southern Bitch is a rawkin’ husband-and-wife team with delightfully thick West Virginia accents. Both groups are propelled by the formidable backbeat of ex-Five-Eight drummer Tigger.
