Sound Menu January 20 2001 Wed

WED/JANUARY 17
BONAVENTURE QUARTET — A new “acoustic swing” act featuring former Aquarium Rescue Unit guitarist Charlie Williams, fellow six-stringer Dave Boling and Kingsized bassist Chris Dale dedicated to capturing the cool, vintage sound of Django Reinhardt. At the group’s weekly residency, performing Wednesdays 7:30-10:30 p.m., they’re joined on alternate weeks by clarinetist Larry Barr (leaning the group more toward the gypsy side of things) and vocalist Amy Pike (creating a Paris jazz/western swing hybrid á la Hot Club of Cowtown). Barr rounds out the quartet tonight. Eclipse di Luna/764 Miami Circle (Sarig)
CATFISH HODGE — Catfish Hodge is a quintessential blues/boogie/R&B veteran, having recorded 22 albums in a 30-year career. He grew up in Detroit under the sway of Motown Records and moved to Washington, D.C., in the early ’70s, where he was a mainstay at local clubs for a decade. In the ’80s he moved to California, forming the Bluesbusters with Little Feat alum Paul Barrere. The band recorded and toured until Little Feat regrouped in the late ’80s. Hodge now lives in Virginia. His band will feature guitarist Tom Principato and Nighthawks drummer Pete Ragusa. Blind Willie’s (Powell)
SENSUAL ASSAULT — The Stimulator of subMedia hosts the first of a series of nights featuring IDM (intelligent dance music — a stuttering, sometimes static-ridden type of breakbeat-driven electro ambience). The night also functions as a release party for Warp/Schematic recording artist Richard Devine’s recent CD, Lipswitch. Devine’s Schematic labelmates Phoenecia perform as well. There will also be a drum ‘n’ bass set by Urbal and visual installations. Fountainhead Lounge (Ware)
STIMULANTS, HELGAS, KICKSTAND — The socially distorted, semi-punk and always rocking Helgas continue their residency tonight at the Star Bar. You’ve got to hand it to these good-natured lugs — they sure know how to pick some cool bands with which to share their residency. Tonight, Scooter and his average Joes surround themselves with some of Atlanta’s hottest rockers. Sue and her revised and testiculated Stimulants, along with old-school punk scenester Ray Dafrico’s scruffy trio Kickstand, open tonight’s festivities. Star Bar (Smith)BASIL’S CAFÉ: Showtyme Jazz Duo
