Sound Menu June 27 2001 Fri

MARCIO FARACO — This young French-based Brazilian displays a lush, breathy, ethereal and romantic take on bossa nova on his impressive debut, Ciranda (Blue Thumb/ Verve), which he’s promoting with an acoustic quintet on this tour. Spivey Hall (Falstaff)

FIVE EIGHT — Long a fixture of the Athens scene, this three-piece is throwing a special fan appreciation night for their Atlanta friends. Currently recording demos for the follow-up to last year’s excellent album, The Good Nurse, Five Eight is planning a CD/DVD of past and present career highlights. Tonight’s show will be recorded for the project. Admission is $1, and Kenny Howes and the Yeah! open. PlanetJam Cotton Club (Smith)

GARY MOTLEY TRIO --- This jazz trio christens the new High Note Jazz Club at the Vault, the former Buckhead dance club turned jazz venue. The now jazz-only club is open Wed.-Sat. Motley recently returned to his trio days and released Compassion, a CD made up mostly of original compositions, but also includes old standbys such as “My Romance” and “Summer Night.” High Note Jazz Club at The Vault/3259 Roswell Road (Keel)

GOODIES — Putting the “good” in these Goodies is Holiday Childress, who may well be the most dynamically talented (as well as the zaniest) frontman this region has seen in years. His songs are mini-operas told with loopy humor, often delivered while he dances onstage atop high heels, while simultaneously playing wicked lead guitar. Scrappy Hamilton opens. Smith’s Olde Bar (Nicoll)

LIZ MELENDEZ — See listing for June 27. Pepper’s/Riverdale (Sarig)

ORQUESTA IBRAHaM FERRER — This retro-Cuban entourage continues to thrill audiences thanks to the superb musicianship of octogenarian pianist Rubén GonzAlez and an incredibly tight big band, as well as honey-throated singer Ibrahim Ferrer (now in his 70s), who can moonwalk with the best of them. Cameroon native Richard Bona opens. Chastain Park Amphitheatre (Falstaff)

RED LETTER BLONDE, HOT AUGUST KNIGHTS, BLUEJAYS — Red Letter Blonde is a rocked-up Americana band who suggest what might happen if Paul Westerberg swallowed Buck Owens. Opening act the Bluejays fit right in here, with a sweetly mellow and breezy approach to country twang, but the Knights’ amusing punked-up Neil Diamond tribute sticks out like a goose in the henhouse. Echo Lounge (Nicoll)

ROD STEWART — What’s a 50-something rocker to do? Prancing around to the old hits simply looks lame. Retool himself as a contemporary pop singer and he sounds out of his league. The ex-Face instead opts for something in between, tempering his slick new R&B with a stripped-down band (and five-piece string section), while infusing just enough “Maggie May”-era nuggets to keep the keisters in the seats. Philips Arena (Horowitz)

THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS, JOYDROP — Opening for They Might Be Giants (see article) at this week’s On the Bricks free concert, slyly seductive Canadian pop band Joydrop are touring to support their forthcoming album Viberate. Vocalist Tara Slone and her group also perform a mini-set live on 99X today at 9 a.m. Centennial Olympic Park (Smith)

THIRD COAST THE CITY RELEASE PARTY — Atlanta’s hip-hop underbelly is laid bare at this event, celebrating the release of the Third Coast The City: Vol. 2 compilation. Scheduled acts include Minamina Goodsong, Exile, Vintage Imperial, Fatbak and Bloodfang, with DJ T’Challa on the wheels. MJQ Concourse (Hutchinson)
