The Melvins: Everybody Loves Sausages

On Everybody Loves Sausages, the Melvins put a unique spin on their record collection, sometimes capturing their own sound well. But as a whole this covers album misses the mark. Highlights include a brutal take on Venom’s “Warhead,” and snapshots of pop weirdness via the Scientists’ “Set it on Fire” and the Fugs’ “Carpe Diem.” Other covers include forgettable nods to Queen and David Bowie, and a questionable street-punk version of the Jam’s “Art School.” The album is filled with guest appearances, including frequent collaborator Jello Biafra, and grunge-era contemporary Mark Arm. Despite some solid song choices, the album drags at points. Perhaps that’s just the pitfall of a covers album; not even the Ramones pulled one off without a hitch. (3 out of 5 stars)
