Are Men

How ironic that Joseph Plunket had to leave Atlanta/Athens and move to Brooklyn to write a brilliant soundtrack for hanging out with your bro’s on a humid day in rural Georgia. Even his Kermit the Frog inflections in “Like Me Better” and “Sunday Driver” ring with honesty and maturity that transcends woe-is-me heartbreak. The layered strings in “Closer Than a Friend” and the strum and twang in “Man Alone” rock with equal parts Allman Bros. and Neil Young. As such, Are Men is a lifestyle record. It’s a collection of songs that are filled with the kind of sadness and elation only a Southern gentleman displaced in the Big Apple can know. 4 stars
