Bar Review - Hail Mary

Few things say sleepy summer morning quite like a fresh-made Bloody Mary. Despite being a daybreak brew, there is always a certain charm to watching genteel ladies sip on vodka-laced beverages while tomatoes are at their reddest and celery at its crispest. For the younger, brassier Hotlanta set, recovery is a dish best served chilled — with some vodka and fresh veggie juice on the rocks, thank you.

At Grant Park's Six Feet Under, the humble breakfast beverage is given its due in the form of a weekend Bloody Mary bar. Choose your vodka ($4 for well, up to $8 for premium selections) and bring the glass to the shiny blond bar to load up on your selection of mixes and spices.

Although recognizable names including Clamato, Whiskey Willy's and Tabasco Bloody Mary mixes are offered, there's hardly any reason to dose up on known flavors when Six Feet Under's bartenders have their own secret, spicy tomato juice-based concoction prepared for your morning pleasure.

Vaguely oniony and delightfully juicy, it's the homemade mix that serves as the base for Six Feet Under's Ragin' Cajun Bloody Mary. Made with Absolut Peppar, a dollop of horseradish, a slice of jalapeño and a crunchy stick of celery, the drink packs a punch guaranteed to jolt an unruly hangover into a controllable buzz by the drink's end. The real taste secret, however, is on the rim, salted and peppered with cayenne. Spill it into your drink for an extra shock to the taste buds, or demurely drink from the edge of the glass for a spicy bite.
