Profile - Gerry Weber

Georgia ACLU's legal director

You can thank Gerry Weber, legal director of the Georgia American Civil Liberties Union, for the legalization of both oral sex and out-of-wedlock fornication, among other, less titillating causes. CL caught up with Weber, an avid collector of vintage oddities, shortly after he paid his final visit to the late, great Lakewood Antiques Market.

Weber's vintage "Wee-Wind" Airstream dates from 1949. He paid $5,000 for it — half as much as he paid for his first house.

Weber owns two homes in Cabbagetown and wants to build a tunnel between them. That's daunting — they're six blocks apart — but less so for the guy who overturned Georgia's sodomy law.

Not only is Weber a follower of experimental-noise rock, he also played the notoriously difficult theremin — which is comprised of a pair of antennas and is controlled by hands that never touch the instrument — on Big Fish Ensemble's album State Bird of Big Fish Ensemble.

Weber's best Lakewood find: a 60-year-old hypnotizing machine. When asked if he's successfully hypnotized anyone, he replied, "I've tried, but not yet succeeded."
