Project Runway' season 6, episode 3

THE CHALLENGE: Create a fun and fashionable surfwear look

Mitchell was like a new kitten — curious, kinda wobbly, dazzled by flashy lights, and easily distracted by balls of yarn, or in this case, bobbin thread. Cats also hate water and have no context for swimwear.

So, the gang hit the beach last night and we got a glimpse of Tim Gunn in flip flops and Ray Bans — a sight nearly as rare as a Yeti (or Mitchell at a sewing machine). It was a cruel move to put the episode's highlight within the first 90 seconds ("The beach, yeuh!" enthused Tim), but we continued to watch, because that's what America does.

Like a bad horror movie, Mitchell foreshadowed his demise to a fault. "I want to work with someone who can carry me on this challenge," he said. "I keep wishing I knew how to sew swimwear," he bemoaned. "Auf Weidersehen bitches," he giggled at the Feather Prince.

Halfway into the challenge, which pitted the designers against each other in teams of two, Tim arrived with news from Heidi: The designers were to create a second, avant-garde look (see: big collars and poofy skirts). OMG, no way! Ra'mon ran around like crazy conceiving of and creating two outfits while Mitchell stood looking confused and trying to figure out how he ended up in this room with all these cameras. We don't know either, Mitch. Nearby, Qristyl and Epperson fought over who had worse taste and whose gag-inducing outfits they should send down the runway. Qristyl talks a big talk, but she ultimately turned out to be a pushover.
