The Forward Arts Foundation has announced that Born is the recipient of their Emerging Artist Award for 2012-13. From working in the street to creating the sculptural assemblages seen in his recent ‘’Accidental solo exhibition, Born’s progression as an artist is notable for moving forward without abandoning the interests and aesthetic themes that have driven his work.
Local artist and critic Karen Tauches wrote of his most recent work, “The collage-like style of pre-communications-age technology and a heavy dependence on wood harkens back to classic twentieth-century artmakers. Indeed, the bio mentions such influences: Robert Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, Vladimir Tatlin, and Kurt Schwitters. These nostalgic overtones suggest a romanticism in old things, now destroyed.”
The award comes with a $10,000 grant and a solo exhibition at the Swan Coach House Gallery in 2013. Last year’s recipient, Tricia Patterson, will exhibit in October of this year. Other finalists for the award this year were S. Andre Keichian, Kevin Byrd, Romy Maloon, and John-Paul Floyd.’’
