UPDATED: Reese Witherspoon got arrested in Atlanta, is a 'US citizen'

Witherspoon plays a "straight-talking American woman" on and off the screen

Reese Witherspoon and her husband James Toth were arrested on Friday in Atlanta. According to Variety, Toth was pulled over by a cop after weaving between lanes on Peachtree Street. He blew .139 on a Breathalyzer test and they booked him briefly for DUI.

The story might have ended there, but Witherspoon, who was the passenger in the car, apparently decided that this was the right time to share some basic facts about her citizenship status:

"Mrs. Witherspoon began to hang out the window and say that she did not believe that I was a real police officer," according to the police report. "I told Mrs. Witherspoon to sit on her butt and be quiet."

Once Toth was placed under arrest, Witherspoon exited the vehicle and was instructed to get back in the car. According to the report, she "stated that she was a 'US citizen' and that she was allowed to 'stand on American ground.'"

The situation devolved from there and Witherspoon was booked on a disorderly conduct charge.

Toth and Witherspoon have a court date this morning, but aren't expected to show. That's a shame, because it could be her moment to recreate the best scene from Freeway.

Witherspoon is in Atlanta filming The Good Lie, which is about a "Sudanese refugee taken in by a straight-talking American woman" played by Witherspoon, according to IMDB. Clearly, she has no problem staying in character.

UPDATE: We have obtained the police report cited by Variety and must issue a correction. Toth and Witherspoon were driving a Ford Fusion, not a Ford Focus as previously stated by Variety. Depending on the model, this may mean that Toth and Witherspoon were getting a much better MPG while allegedly breaking the law. In either case, we can confirm that these are both American cars well-suited for a "US citizen."

Also, the court date has been postponed to May 22.
