One person has died following an argument that prompted a deadly shooting in the heart of Downtown during yesterday's rush hour.

A few minutes after 5:30 p.m., two men began arguing in the hallway leading from Underground Atlanta to the Five Points MARTA station. According to APD Captain Mike O'Connor, who did not release the identities of either individual, one of the men fired his weapon "at least one time" at the other man. The shooting victim fled from the lower Underground hallway, up through the Five Points station, and collapsed near the station's Peachtree Street entrance. O'Connor said the victim died after being transported to Grady Memorial Hospital.

“He just pulled out a gun and shot the guy. I think they were arguing. I didn’t know what over, though,” witness Anthony Grant told WSB-TV.

A man claiming to be the victim's father told WAGA-TV that the 25-year-old man was on his way to visit his girlfriend.

O'Connor, who did not say what the argument was about, said numerous officers working for APD, MARTA, and Underground were in the area near the shooting. He said the shooting was particularly "brazen" given the security presence and timing in the middle of rush hour.

"There's always a concern anytime there's gunfire, whether it's busy or not," O'Connor told reporters. "There's obviously a heightened concern when there's a lot of other people about."

MARTA spokesman Lyle Harris tells CL the transit agency's officers were not directly involved in the shooting. They did assist APD officers near the Peachtree Street entrance where the shooting victim collapsed. MARTA police officers also helped detain a man whom APD considers a "person of interest" after he fled the scene. That man has been taken into custody.
