First Slice 3-8-16: APS Board’s unanimous OK of Carstarphen’s school revamp meets harsh backlash

Parents and community leaders put up vocal protest to no avail

Despite vocal protests from parents and community leaders, the Atlanta Public School Board voted unanimously
last night to pass Superintendent Meria Carstarphen’s turnaround strategy meant to address failing schools before the state could potentially take over. The plan will close Bethune Elementary School, merge Connally Elementary with Venetian Hills Elementary, and merge Grove Park Elementary with Woodson Elementary. The plan also promises to launch a new kindergarten-through-eighth-grade STEM Academy.

Clark Atlanta University’s pursuit of a lawsuit against Morris Brown over the disputed ownership of recently sold property has been approved by the Georgia Supreme Court.

An Atlanta women’s literary society dedicated a “Bench by the Road,” inspired by author Toni Morrison, in front of Woodruff Library on the AUC campus.
