First Slice 5-8-13: Georgia releases school report cards

Plus, don't shoot the Hooch

Gov. Nathan Deal vetoed five bills yesterday and two signing statements. He didn't make any line-item vetoes - a rare occurrence over the past few years.

Georgia's Department of Education released a new report card for schools. Among the state's best performers were the City of Decatur and Gwinnett County. Atlanta Public Schools, Clayton County, and DeKalb County, ranked below average.

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford won a special election for an open Congressional seat against Elizabeth Colbert Busch.

Spotted in Woodruff Park: several news teams fighting to the death filming scenes for Anchorman 2. No hand grenades or tridents were used in the battle royale.

Don't swim in, or shoot, the Hooch, officials say. Heavy rains have caused E. coli levels to skyrocket in the Chattahoochee River.
