Omnivore - Gigantic steaks at Hill Street Tavern

New pub opens in the Pencil Factory Lofts

Image I dined Sunday night at the new Hill Street Tavern (349 Decatur St., 404-602-5302) in the Pencil Factory Lofts. I wouldn’t exactly call it a gastro pub but it does offer more than the usual bar food around town.

The signature dishes seem to be steaks and pork chops. We are talking huge, plate filling, well-grilled steaks. Wayne and I split one ($30) and, with appetizers and sides, it was quite adequate. I checked out the double pork chop served at an adjoining table. Honestly, Fred Flintstone couldn’t eat this gigantically thick piece of meat by his lonesome.

Other dishes include trout and shrimp and grits, plus sandwiches. I tried one of the latter for lunch today — a BLT to which a fried duck egg was added. I’d prefer it without the egg, but the yolk was a nice dip for my salty, crisp fries.

Overall, it looks promising. I’ll have more to say in “Grazing” later this week.
