Omnivore - Major food companies fight GMO labeling in Calif.
The battle surrounding Calif. Prop 37 continues
If Calif. passes Prop 37, aka the “California Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act”, it could become the first state to require companies to label all food containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs). As the time to vote on Prop 37 nears, campaign contributions either in support or against the November measure continue to pour in.
Daily Democrat reports that proponents, largely big natural food companies and passionate consumers, have raised $2.8 million according to finance records filed with the California Secretary of State's Office. However, "opponents have raised more than nine times as much. Almost all of the nearly $25 million has come from a variety of chemical, seed and processed-food companies, including Coca-Cola, General Mills, Nestle, PepsiCo and DuPont Pioneer."
Apparently, Monsanto and Dupont alone have contributed more than $8 million to beat Proposition 37. The infographic above, published by The Cornucopia Institute, illustrates which corporate agribusiness companies are for and against Prop 37, revealing some not so surprising opponents including Kashi, Horizon Organic, Silk, and more.
