Omnivore - Cook like a pro with Garnish & Gather’s ‘Be The Chef’ kits

Startup partners with Atlanta chefs to recreate restaurant meals at home


Last week, I had a dinner that was expertly conceived by Gunshow frontman chef Kevin Gillespie: plump Savannah shrimp, pan-seared and served atop farm-milled grits, with a colorful bounty of local summer veggies tossed in lemon juice and basil. It was delicious, and almost every ingredient on the plate was sourced locally. There was enough food to feed two hungry people, it only cost $35, and I didn’t have to make a reservation. In fact, I didn’t even have to leave my house.

The meal came courtesy of the locavore-championing Garnish & Gather, an Atlanta startup that provides ready-to-cook meal kits consisting of a recipe and all the raw, locally sourced ingredients required to make it. Emily Golub founded G&G last summer as a way to encourage more home chefs to eat local (and to show kitchen amateurs that it is, in fact, possible to create a gourmet meal in your home). Now, G&G is expanding its recipes not just to include awesome local meals, but meals dreamed up by some of Atlanta’s most acclaimed chefs.

G&G’s “Be The Chef” series, which launched last month, is an ongoing partnership with area chefs that brings popular restaurants’ standout dishes into Atlanta homes. The series kicked off with St. Cecilia’s Craig Richards, who spilled the recipe for the restaurant’s popular charred octopus dish with sundried tomato pesto and white bean arugula salad, and continued with “Top Chef” champ Kevin Gillespie, whose shrimp ‘n grits were available for order just last week.

Danielle Moore, G&G’s VP of Community, told CL that upcoming chef collabs include Watershed’s Joe Truex and Cardamom Hill’s Asha Gomez for July, Wrecking Bar’s Terry Koval in August, and King + Duke’s Joe Schafer in September. Each chef will share a recipe for a dish currently on the restaurant’s menu and G&G will provide the actual ingredients.

Home cooks just have to place an order, snag their meal kit at one of G&G’s pickup locations, give that farm-fresh produce a good scrub, and get to cooking - no reservations required.
