Eat some salted caramel ice cream at Morelli’s

The tiny shop has had a huge impact on Atlanta’s ice cream rep, earning accolades from national and local media for being some of the country’s best. Flavors like ginger lavender and balsamic strawberry are both cerebral and pleasurable, but the truly addictive one is salted caramel: rich, deep, with a wicked kick of salt. Beyond the ice cream, hanging out at the metal tables outside of Morelli’s with the happy toddlers and their friendly parents gives you a true sense of this family-centric neighborhood.

Go to a plant sale at Church of the Holy Comforter

The Church of the Holy Comforter, part of the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta, is home to the Friendship Center, which offers day programs for people with mental illnesses. Gardening is a huge part of the congregation’s mission, and the church’s gardens include vegetable and herb gardens, a butterfly garden, annual and perennial flower gardens, and a woodland garden surrounding a 175-year-old red oak tree. The church holds seed and plant sales throughout the year, where you can buy flowers, fruit trees, seeds, and seedlings.

Have dinner at Spoon

There are only two full-scale, sit-down restaurants in Ormewood, but luckily one of them is the best Thai restaurant in town. Sleek and sophisticated yet family-friendly, try any one of the curries or stir-fries, and don’t miss the silky coconut soup.

Take a bike tour of the ‘hood

Ormewood Park is beloved by its residents, but not because of the nightlife, shopping, or dining. Rather, they love the old houses with their huge backyards, the leafy streets, and the loving sense of community. There’s no better way to get a feel for Ormewood than walking or biking around its hilly streets taking in the flowers and trees and sense of goodwill.

Grab a bargain at Lucky Exchange

Tucked into the back of Ormewood Square, this curated vintage store has all the things you hope to find at the thrift store but never do. Ormewood’s Lucky Exchange is way less picked-over than its vintage boutique counterparts up the road in Little Five Points.
