Sunday night HBO whipped out the second season premiere of “Hung,” a half-hour gigolo show that has yet to match the comedic potential of “Fred Garvin, Male Prostitute.” Judging from the latest episode, “Just the Tip,” the raunchy dramedy has got a handle on the drama, but hasn’t come to grips with the premise’s comedy.

Thomas Jane plays Ray Drecker, a former major league baseball contender turned high school coach — which, coincidentally enough, is the same initial premise as the first season of HBO’s “Eastbound and Down.” “Hung” takes place in Detroit, a city bearing the brunt of America’s economic woes, and as baseball season begins in the new episode, Ray fights athletic cutbacks and the prospects of losing his job at the end of the school year due to impossible cutbacks in the school’s budget. At his best, Jane captures the anger and frustration of a well-meaning U.S. male who’s been screwed by capitalism and the American dream.
