Quick Bites: Donetto plans Westside debut; Steven Satterfield saves scraps, Venkman’s goes late-night and more

A wave of cibo Italiano is hitting Atlanta hard this summer, including the second Italian concept from the Indigo Road Restaurant Group (O-Ku, Colletta, Oak Steakhouse), set to open in the Westside this summer. Executive chef Michael Perez helms the kitchen at Donetto, located across from Miller Union. “Italy is about family and that is how we want Donetto to feel to every guest when they walk in,” said managing partner Steve Palmer in a release. The menu will feature bone marrow pasticciotto and smoked quail stuffed pasta.

Did you know the average household throws away 40 percent of the food it purchases? Television program “Scraps” hopes to change that. The Atlanta episode featuring James Beard Award-winning chef and cookbook author Steven Satterfield of Miller Union airs this Sun., June 11 at 10:30 p.m. on FYI.

There is a new late night option in Old Fourth Ward. Venkman’s new Friday and Saturday after-hours menu, available from 10:30 p.m until close, features a pickle plate, smoked trout dip and chips, hummus and crudit̩s and a crock of the week (first up: smoked chicken and corn chili).

Mediterranean-style Maya Steaks and Seafood closed its doors after more than two years of service in Sandy Springs. Chef/owner Mimmo Alboumeh opened the restaurant at 152 Roswell Rd. in January of 2015.

In anticipation of the summer opening of C. Ellet’s at the Battery at Suntrust Park, Linton Hopkins and team are offering preview tastes at Restaurant Eugene. Eugene’s Father’s Day menu, prepared by executive chef Chris Edwards, will be chock-full of prime steak cuts like a cowboy ribeye topped with bone marrow butter.

Poke is still trending and Westside Provisions District is hopping aboard with the latest iteration of the Hawaiian-inspired raw fish bowls. Pok̩ Perfect opens its second Atlanta location this summer with its signature poke bowls, sushirritos and create-your-own options.

Ponce City Market’s City Winery is opening for lunch Mon., June 12. Menu highlights for the 11:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. service include kale Caesar salad, a Creekstone cheddar burger, Southern pork belly baos, deviled eggs, burrata with fresh bread and a variety of flatbreads. A light bites menu will also be available from 3-5 p.m.

Ryan Jenson (Table + Main, Osteria Mattone) has been named chef de cuisine at forthcoming Coalition Food and Beverage. The downtown Alpharetta restaurant featuring “wood fired classics” plans to open fall of 2017.

At this past weekend’s Atlanta Food & Wine Festival, tasting tent attendees were given tokens by presenting sponsor PNC Bank to vote for their Best of the Fest contest. The winner? Bistro 17 chef Adam Kirby’s Pawley’s Island shrimp and grits from Hilton Head, SC. Last year’s winner was Hattie B’s Hot Chicken of Nashville.
