NEW MUSIC MONDAY: 4 new jams for the work week grind

A fresh batch of songs from Future & Young Thug, Jeffrey B

Atlanta hip-hop staples Future and Young Thug teamed up and dropped a surprise joint mixtape, Super Slimey, on Fri., Oct. 20. The mixtape features 13 tracks recorded in the studio with Future's in-house engineer Seth Firkins over the course of a few days. Firkins passed away suddenly from cardiac arrest on Sat., Sept. 23, and Super Slimey could very well be the last major project released with his touch. Jump to highlights on the tape with "Cruise Ship" and "Patek Water," featuring Offest of Migos fame.

Another spike from the underground hip-hop scene comes from St. Louis MC and Working Class Music affiliate Gotta Be Karim with his third full-length Save the Babies, released on Wed., Oct. 17. The album's first single "Working Man," featuring Gangsta Boo (most notably of Three 6 Mafia), offers a glimpse of the everyday hustle. The album, steeped in inspirational rhythms and beats, illustrates the ups and downs of workaday life. Save the Babies, which takes its name from "Save the Children," a deep cut in Marvin Gaye's What's Going On, offers a realistic take on the American Dream working ceaselessly to create a life one wants with the ones they love, but never having the time to enjoy it.

The Compartmentalizationists make a cameo appearance in Trial by Fire, a forthcoming film directed by Ed Zwick, slated for a 2018 release. The group appears as a punk band from 1988 called Molly Ringworm. Not many details about the movie can be divulged at this time, but here's what we know: The Compartmentalizationists (since they are all over 30) play a band that's been around since 1980, and the cast features the lovely Laura Dern of Wild at Heart, Blue Velvet, and "Twin Peaks" fame. The single, titled "Cover Me in Your Filth," featuring Scotty Hoffman of Small Reactions, is a two-and-a-half-minute spasm of the nit and grit one would expect in a '80s post-punk time capsule. Writing and recording the single inspired guitarist Jeffrey Butzer (the Bicycle Eaters, Club Silencio), bassist Chad Shivers, and drummer Sean Zearfoss (Small Reactions) to finish up an EP in the same style. More information is coming soon.

Indie/shoegaze trio JesusHoney makes its premiere straight out of Cabbagetown with its first single "Take Out." No one is reinventing the wheel here; guitarist David Railey, bassist Justin Gray, and drummer Robbie Nelson endeavor to blend shoegaze and post-punk into a sound that's both fresh and comfortingly familiar. The single is released in anticipation of the group's eponymous EP due out in January.
