The South Central LA rapper shows off his vulnerable side with his latest album

ScHoolboy Q’s 2016 album, Blank Face LP (Top Dawg Entertainment), shows off an unexpected willingness for the South Central LA rapper to be a bit more vulnerable. Born Quincy Matthew Hanley, ScHoolboy Q’s lyrics reflect upon the psychological ramifications of life on the streets, and calling out police brutality with a critical eye. The concept that binds songs such a “Lord Have Mercy,” “Kno Ya Wrong,” and “By Any Means” is the “Blank Face” as a defense against the world’s harsh realities, and yet, it’s the first time Q has really let listeners in. Despite his pensive state, Q’s flow and left-field production maintain the grit and unpredictability that made him a gangster rap favorite in the first place.
