Georgia Democrat and voting rights activist Stacey Abrams will once again test the system by running for state governor next year, she announced Wednesday. “Opportunity and success in Georgia shouldn’t be determined by background or access to power,” she said, adding that she will provide “leadership that understands the true pain that folks are feeling and has real plans.” Abrams narrowly lost her race for the post in 2018 against Republican Gov. Brian Kemp amidst accusations of voter suppression. She has litigation pending as a result. In a Reuters interview just before her announcement, Abrams expressed optimism that the U.S. Congress will eventually pass two bills aimed at protecting voting rights. “I remain very bullish on the possibility of us getting these bills passed,” she said. “But that means we have to keep talking about it. And we have to keep amplifying the real effects of these laws.” abcnews.go.com
