Gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams thinks teachers should start out making $50,000 a year.

Gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams wants to raise the starting salary of teachers in the state to $50,000 from the prevailing level of less than $40,000 and increase average pay from $60,553 to $75,000. The boost would put the state in the top 10 nationwide, as opposed to its present ranking of 21st.

Abrams announced her plan on Sunday in Tucker as she accepted an endorsement from the Georgia Association of Educators. “We need a governor who does not see education as an election-year gimmick,” she told supporters, “but sees our responsibility as a guarantee for the strongest future for our people.” wabe.org
