NEWS BRIEF: Pilot program provides no-cost lawyers for evicted renters
The rent is too damn high
Tenants facing eviction can now get legal representation thanks to an arrangement between city councilors and a local nonprofit known as the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation. The agreement also included approval of a $500,000 donation to the group.
According to the Atlanta Regional Commission, 36,510 evictions were filed within the city between April 2020 and July 2 of this year. "Our eviction crisis harms individuals, families, schools, neighborhoods and our community as a whole," AVLF Executive Director Michael Lucas told Axios. "We believe this pilot represents an important first step towards reducing that harm and creating a more safe and stable Atlanta." Details: axios.com
