Atlanta's Empress of Soul to receive a great honor

Soul music star Gladys Knight has been named a 2022 Kennedy Center honoree for her “boundless vocal range and soulfulness that has stood the test of time,” the board announced Friday. “You could never have told me as a young girl starting my career that I would be honored on a stage such as this, with artists and humanitarians such as these – it just wouldn’t have seemed possible,” Knight, 78, said in a statement. “It would have been the dream of all dreams.”

Born in Atlanta, the “empress of soul” has a string of hits going back to the 1960s and is the recipient of seven Grammy awards. Knight is a Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee and is listed on Rolling Stone’s list of the Greatest Singers of All Time. Details: theguardian.com
