NEWS BRIEF: Georgia Tech launches new device to monitor pets indoors
Home alone pets can’t hide
Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology have created a device that allows absent pet owners to better track their furry friends at home. PetTrack is said to provide greater detail than cameras or GPS gadgets by using a sensor on a collar that can be viewed via a smartphone app.
Unlike regular cameras, the sensor can perceive an animal hidden behind obstacles such as furniture. “PetTrack comprises two things: one is knowing the pet’s indoor location and second is trying to understand their activity,” said Ashutosh Dhenke, a School of Computer Science professor. “Combining where the pet is and what the orientation of the pet is, we can create a summary map of where the pet has been during the day and what activity the pet was doing.” Details: news.gatech.edu
