OBITUARY: Frank Alexander “Alex” Thrift

Guitarist Frank (Alex) Thrift, who took the idea of the “tribute” band to new heights as co-founder of the Fleetwood Mac tribute band Rumors ATL, passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2023.

Thrift’s passion for music and the guitar was infectious. He also played in original bands The Quiet Men, Mata Hari’s, Horror Business, Owner of the Sun, ExWives, Tom Celica, Runnin’ Down a Dream (a Tom Petty tribute band), and, more recently, The Wait, and more, He loved playing with fellow musicians and shared his amazing talent with thousands of people all over the world.

To honor Thrift’s memory, his family is holding a “celebration of life” this Saturday, March 25, from 1 PM to 4 PM at Carmichael Funeral Home, 2950 King St SE, Smyrna, GA 30080. (770) 435-4467.

Anyone who knew Thrift is invited to attend, remember, and celebrate his special life. Those who attend are invited to perform, sing a song in his honor, or tell a story about him that makes you smile.

Thrift was born January 22, 1973, in Terre Haute, Indiana. He spent part of his early childhood in Indiana where he grew especially close to his Elkins grandparents who remained special to him throughout his entire life. Thrift moved to Atlanta with his mother when he was very young. He loved Atlanta and considered it his hometown. He was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta United FC.

Thrift shared his thoughts about music and touring in many publications, two of which are included here, in links to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and Voyage Atlanta. His obituary may be found here.

The family wishes that anyone who has photos of Thrift to upload them here. They will be used Saturday to celebrate his life!

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Musicians Foundation in honor of Frank (Alex) Thrift.
