Black History Month, 2025

An annual commemoration originating in 1970 in the United States, Black History Month — also known as African-American History Month — celebrates and remembers important people and events in the African diaspora. It is also observed in Canada, Ireland, and Great Britain.

Known as the Black mecca of the South, Atlanta is a vibrant and educational place to celebrate Black History Month. The home of the Civil Rights movement, Atlanta has produced many African-American heroes who gave people hope for the future and advanced the quality of life for the Black community, and continues to do so today.

The King Center and the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Park are great places to start. This living memorial is dedicated to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his belief in Non-Violent Social Change, offering a variety of programs and services committed to fulfilling King’s dream.

Atlanta’s National Center for Civil and Human Rights is a place that echoes with history during Black History Month. Unfortunately, it will be closed through the fall of 2025 for expansion. Nonetheless, virtual tours are available on its website.

If you want the real story of Atlanta during the early days of the Civil Rights movement, plan ahead and book a trip with Civil Rights Tours Atlanta. Travel throughout the city on a tour bus with founder and tour guide Tom Houck as he takes you deep into the neighborhoods where the movement first took shape and allows time for selfies at some of the major local landmarks in black History. Houck should know his way around Atlanta streets, he was Dr. King’s driver back in the day.

Otherwise, simply walk along Auburn Avenue and the Edgewood Corridor to place yourself nearer to the original Ebenezer Baptist Church, to walk past the historic offices of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, or to attend services at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, with Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Raphael G. Warnock officiating.
