Isamu Noguchi: I Am Not a Designer, High Museum — Despite Isamu Noguchi’s disingenuous statement in 1949 that design wasn’t really his thing, the Japanese-American artist produced a substantial body of work in architecture, industrial design, ceramics, furniture, lighting, stage sets, and landscape design. The High’s show will feature roughly two hundred objects of his that rarely see the light of day. Among the delights herein are sculptural models of potential and unrealized projects such as a house designed in collaboration with architect Kazumi Adachi. The museum lauds the late Noguchi as “a multinational, interdisciplinary artist and designer who shaped a more open, inclusive world.” Noguchi is known locally for creating a playground that was installed in Piedmont Park in 1976. Called Playscapes, the concept was commissioned by the High and gifted to the City of Atlanta to commemorate that year’s bicentennial. — Kevin C. Madigan
