Locomotion: Railroads and the Making of Atlanta at Atlanta History Center
Locomotion: Railroads and the Making of Atlanta is an ongoing exhibition exploring the railroad origins of the city. At its center is the restored locomotive Texas, built in 1856 for the Western & Atlantic Railroad, whose terminus helped give rise to Atlanta.
The exhibit also features the Zero Mile Post, one of Atlanta’s most significant artifacts. Installed in the 1850s to mark the Southern terminus of the Western & Atlantic Railroad, the marker helped define the city center in the 19th century.
Placed together, the Texas locomotive and the Zero Mile Post tell Atlanta’s origin story through objects that would have been part of the city’s early transportation landscape.
Visitors can explore how railroads shaped commerce, movement and identity, transforming a rail terminus into the modern city of Atlanta.
